The Obsidian Flats

The Obsidian Flats
The Obsidian Flats are a chilling monument to the destructive power of modern arcane warfare. Located in the heart of the Shattered Plains, this vast, perfectly level expanse of black, razor-sharp glass was created during the height of the Shattering when a localized "Mana-Bomb" detonated, flash-melting the sandy soil and vitrifying it into a single, seamless sheet of obsidian.
The Mirror of the Void
The surface of the flats is so smooth that it acts as a perfect black mirror, reflecting the chaotic, mana-scarred sky of the Western Continent. However, this beauty is deceptive; the glass is incredibly fragile in some places and diamond-hard in others. The edges of the glass shards are so thin they can slice through leather boots and flesh with the slightest touch, making travel across the flats a slow and agonizing process.
The Echo of the Detonation
It is said that the sound of the original detonation is still trapped within the glass. Travelers who press their ears to the surface (a dangerous act) claim to hear a low, rhythmic humming that grows louder as they approach the center of the flats. This center, known as the "Ground Zero," is a perfectly circular depression where the laws of physics seem to fray, and gravity becomes inconsistent.
Scavenger's Gambles
Despite the physical danger, the Obsidian Flats are a prime destination for "Mana-Hunters." The intense heat of the explosion created rare "Glass-Cores"—small, spherical gems of pure, solidified mana that are highly sought after for use in high-end arcane engines. However, the flats are also the hunting grounds for "Glass-Stalkers," elemental entities made of animated obsidian that are nearly invisible against the black surface.
