Overview & Aesthetic

The Scavenger's Shanty is a small, precarious settlement located deep within the densest part of the mangrove root-system, several hours' sail from Drift-Haven. It consists of a half-dozen large crates and shipwreck-sections that have been lashed together and anchored to a cluster of massive roots. The shanty is the secondary base of operations for the most independent and daring "Root-Divers" in The Shrouded Boughs.

The aesthetic is one of extreme, salt-stained improvisation. The structures are covered in multiple layers of tattered sailcloth and reinforced with whatever metal scrap was available. The air is eternally damp and smells of wet wood, oil, and various unknown sea-creatures. The only light comes from a few flickering aether-lanterns hung from the root-arches.

History & Lore

The shanty was established by Scavenger Grix and a few of his associates who felt that Drift-Haven was becoming "too crowded and political." It serves as a quiet place for them to store their largest finds and to perform initial ship-breaking on wrecks that are too damaged to be towed back to the main town. While it is technically part of the Drift-Haven community, the shanty operates with a high degree of autonomy and follows its own set of informal "Scavenger Laws."

Points of Interest

  • Grix's Private Workshop: A heavily reinforced shipping container that has been converted into a cluttered laboratory for tinkering with aether-technology.
  • The Breaker-Dock: A wide platform equipped with several manual winches and saws used to dismantle shipwreck hulls.
  • The Spore-Vault: A small, watertight hollow in one of the mangrove roots used to store particularly volatile or valuable alchemical spores.
  • The Lookout-Knot: A high perch on a nearby root that provides a limited view of the surrounding root-channels.

Local Factions & NPCs

  • The Scavengers: A small group of hardy Muridae who live and work at the shanty.
  • Scavenger Grix: The unofficial leader and primary resident of the shanty.
  • Root-Diver Griz: A wiry and adventurous young mouse who acts as Grix's primary apprentice and scout.
  • The Drift-Watch: Rarely visit the shanty, preferring to let the scavengers handle their own security.

Environmental Hazards / Mechanics

  • Cramped Quarters: Most passages in the shanty are built for Small-sized creatures. Medium-sized creatures are always squeezing (disadvantage on attack rolls and Dex saves).
  • Unstable Structures: During storms or high tides, the shanty can become dangerously unstable. Characters must make a DC 12 Acrobatics check to avoid falling prone during a "Shift" event.
  • Dangerous Neighbor: A large Root-Crab has its nest directly beneath the shanty's main platform, occasionally snapping at any legs that dangle through the gaps in the floor.
