The Boiling Coast

The Boiling Coast

The Boiling Coast is a volatile stretch of shoreline in the North-East, where the frigid waters of the Northern Ocean meet the intense geothermal heat of the Lifeless Swells. The result is a perpetual shroud of thick, sulfurous steam that blankets the jagged cliffs and black-sand beaches for hundreds of miles. The water itself is often at a near-boiling temperature, making it lethal to most marine life and impossible for traditional wooden ships to navigate without specialized cooling wards. The coast is inhabited only by "Steam-Crabs" and other heat-resistant extremophiles, and its geography is constantly shifting due to frequent volcanic eruptions and localized tidal surges.

The Boiling Coast earned its place in the history books in 420 AW as the site of the "Battle of the Boiling Coast," the final and most decisive engagement of the Giantfolk Incursion. It was here that the Ironclad Vanguard—the combined forces of Kigum and Steamfort—made their final stand against the Giantfolk warbands led by Jarl Throm-Ka. The battle was fought in near-zero visibility due to the steam, with soldiers relying on magical sensors and mechanical sonar to find their targets. The Vanguard eventually triumphed by detonating a series of underwater Aether-charges that triggered a localized tsunami, washing the giant warbands back into the sea and cooling the coast enough for a final, decisive ground assault.

Today, the Boiling Coast is a desolate graveyard of ironclad wrecks and giant bones, picked over by scavengers and researchers. The Ironbeard Syndicate maintains a small, heavily fortified research station on one of the higher cliffs, attempting to harness the geothermal energy and study the unique "Boil-Crystals" that form in the superheated vents. These crystals are highly prized for their heat-storage capacity, making them an ideal fuel source for high-altitude airships. However, the station's crew reports frequent sightings of Giantfolk scouts watching from the mist, suggesting that while the battle was won, the war for the Boiling Coast may not be entirely over.
