Properties

The staff is a gnarled length of petrified weirwood, its surface slick with a translucent, bioluminescent blue film. Veins of concentrated Azure Spores pulse rhythmically within the wood, thrumming with the heartbeat of the World-Root.

• Conduit of the World-Root: You gain a +3 bonus to spell attack rolls and to the saving throw DCs of your spells. While holding the staff, you can use it as a spellcasting focus.
• Command the Spore-Born: As an action, you can point the staff at a goblinoid or fungal creature within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by you for 1 hour. While charmed, the creature is physically linked to your intent, obeying your commands as if it were a limb of your own body. If the target is a Spore-Cougher Swarm, you may command up to three swarms simultaneously.
• The Viridian Shift: You can expend 1 charge (the staff has 6, regaining 1d4+2 at dawn) to cast Erupting Earth, Plant Growth, or Wall of Thorns. When cast this way, the effects manifest as rapidly exploding fungal pods and towering walls of hardened, blue-veined mycelium.
• Mycelial Step: While standing on unworked earth or stone, you can use a bonus action to vanish into the root network and reappear in an unoccupied space within 60 feet that is also on unworked earth or stone. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

Lore & Origin

The Root-Caller's Staff was not "crafted" in the traditional sense; it was grown. Deep within the Viridian Cradle, the elite Deep-Root Tenders harvested the calcified femur of a fallen Spore-Born Titan and submerged it in the primary nutrient pool of Mycelia-Zul. Over a century, the fungal god’s own consciousness etched the intricate blue ley-lines into the bone-wood, intending the staff to be a scepter for a terrestrial herald.

It was designed to bridge the gap between the chaotic individuality of the surface world and the serene unity of the Hive-Mind. The Deep-Root Tenders used it to orchestrate the expansion of the "Blue Harvest," guiding the creeping fog into the lungs of the continent. To hold the staff is to hold a direct telephone line to the heart of the world’s most ambitious predator.

The Price of Power

The staff is an active vector for the Azure Spore Infection.

• Spore Proliferation: For every 24 hours the staff remains on your person, your Infection Tier increases by 1.
• The Whispering Hive: While attuned to the staff, you have disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws against being charmed or frightened by fungal creatures, as the voice of Mycelia-Zul constantly whispers of the "Euphoric Surrender."
• The Assimilation Clause: If your Spore Infection reaches the maximum tier while attuned to the staff, your physical form begins to petrify into bark-like skin. You lose all player autonomy as your consciousness is permanently absorbed into the World-Root, turning you into a loyal NPC thrall of Grob-Tuk the Ancient. Only a Wish spell or the total destruction of the World-Root can reverse this process.
