The Earth-Shaker's Wake

The Earth-Shaker’s Wake
Location: Dal Dur, The Grand Plaza & Sub-Levels
Level Range: 5–6
Theme: High Fantasy / Steampunk
Background & Objective
The rhythmic pulse of industrial progress in the dwarven metropole of Dal Dur has been interrupted by a violent, subterranean heartbeat. A massive Lithovore—a creature that feeds on mineral-rich strata—is tunneling directly beneath the city’s Grand Plaza. Driven toward the surface by the "magical desiccation" of its deeper feeding grounds (a result of the Obsidian Scale's unsustainable Aether extraction), the beast is inadvertently grinding against tectonic fault lines.
The party must descend into the steaming, gear-cluttered undercity of Dal Dur, navigate the parasite’s path, and use refined Blue Bile to dissolve the mineral anchors pinning the beast to the foundations. Only by coaxing the creature to relocate can they prevent the Grand Plaza—and the political heart of the region—from collapsing into the dark.
Sight, Sound, and Smell
The air is a thick soup of acrid ozone and damp earth, punctuated by the rhythmic, metallic "hiss-clunk" of ruptured steam pipes. Shimmering veins of raw Aether-dust dance in the cracks of the stone walls, casting a flickering blue light over ancient dwarven masonry and jagged, newly-formed fissures. Above, the distant, muffled roar of the city is drowned out by the deep, resonant grinding of stone on stone—a sound that vibrates through the marrow of your bones.
Key NPCs
Overseer Brass-Gear Hrun
A harried dwarf with a mechanical prosthetic arm and a beard singed by steam-bursts. He represents the Steam Wrights Consortium.
"The foundations of our ancestors shouldn't rattle like a loose piston! Fix the leak in the earth before the gears of this city grind to a permanent halt!"
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal: Progress. The advancement of Dal Dur’s industry is the highest calling.
- Flaw: Stubbornly refuses to admit that industrial Aether-mining is what drew the Lithovore to the surface.
Venda 'Sporelung'
A mutated, deep-delving merchant who breathes Blue Bile through a specialized copper apparatus. She provides the party with the caustic agents needed for the mission.
"Take a deep breath of the blue, travelers. It’s the only way to see what’s really eating the world... and the only way to survive the rot."
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal: Balance. The world is a living thing; we are merely the mites living on its skin.
- Flaw: Often prioritizes the health of the subterranean ecosystem over "temporary" surface lives.
Rumors & Whispers
- True: The Lithovore is not acting out of malice; it is fleeing the Obsidian Scale, who have begun using "Aether-Resonators" deeper in the crust to map the cages of the Sleeping Dragons.
- False: The tremors are the first movements of the dragon Xylira, who is attempting to swallow Dal Dur whole to protect the Omnisporangium.
The Gimmick: Tectonic Instability
The Lithovore’s presence creates a dynamic environment governed by the Tremor Table. At the start of each round of combat or every 10 minutes of exploration, the DM rolls a d6:
- Minor Shake: No mechanical effect, but dust falls from the ceiling.
- Sustained Grinding: The area becomes difficult terrain until the start of the next round.
- Violent Heave: Every creature on the ground must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
- Steam Rupture: A copper pipe bursts. A 15-foot cone of scalding steam deals 3d6 fire damage (DC 14 Dexterity save for half).
- Aether Flare: A vein of Aether Crystal shatters. All creatures within 10 feet must roll on the Wild Magic Surge table.
- Stalactite Collapse: 1d4 stalactites fall. Targeted creatures must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d10 piercing damage.
Tactical Combat & Challenges
The Lithovore's Parasites (Giant Ticks)
These bloated, chitinous horrors have been mutated by the Lithovore’s Blue Bile-rich diet. They are the primary line of defense while the Lithovore is stationary.
Tactics
The Ticks use their Cling ability to drop from the ceiling onto unsuspecting targets. They focus on casters first, sensing the Aether resonance in their blood. If a Tick is reduced to half HP, it explodes in a 5-foot radius of Blue Bile, dealing 2d4 acid damage and slowing the target's movement by 10 feet.
Ecology
Known as "Bile-Suckers," these ticks are an essential part of the Lithovore's symbiotic loop. They clean the Lithovore of necrotic fungus (the Sighing Sickness) and in return, they grow to monstrous sizes, fueled by the magical runoff of the creature’s mineral digestion.
Markings & Signs
Along the tunnel walls, the party may find the rhythmic scratchings of the Sub-Terran Accord.
- Marking: A spiral of three dots enclosed in a copper gear.
- Translation: "The world-breath is heavy here; walk light or wake the stone."
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
By applying the refined Blue Bile to the Lithovore’s mineral anchors, the party successfully coaxes the beast back into the deeper strata. This prevents the collapse of the Grand Plaza and earns them the undying (if gruff) gratitude of the Steam Wrights Consortium.
Item: The Bile-Cooled Core
Wondrous Item, Rare (Requires Attunement)
Lore & Origin
This heavy, brass-encased crystal was harvested from the mineral anchors dissolved during the mission. It pulses with a faint, rhythmic blue light, echoing the heartbeat of the Omnisporangium itself. It was originally forged in the Crystal Forge but was lost to the earth centuries ago.
- Properties: While holding this core, you are immune to being knocked prone by tremors. Additionally, you can use an action to release a "Bile Burst," creating a 10-foot radius of caustic mist that mimics the effects of the Fog Cloud spell and deals 1d6 acid damage to any creature that starts its turn inside.
Political Favor: The Accord’s Seal
The party is granted "Free Passage" through the Deep-Strands, the indestructible Aether-glass tunnels maintained by the kobolds of the Sub-Terran Accord. This drastically reduces travel time between subterranean hubs and provides a +2 bonus to Charisma checks when dealing with subterranean factions.
