The Fog-Tongue

The Fog-Tongue

The Fog-Tongue

The Fog-Tongue is a highly specialized and mystical language used exclusively by the Mist-Weaver Coven and elite scouts of the Muridae within The Shrouded Boughs. It is not a spoken language in the traditional sense, but rather a complex system of rhythmic clicks, high-frequency whistles, and aural vibrations that are designed to harmonize with the magical mist of the forest.

Mechanics of Communication

The Fog-Tongue relies on the acoustic properties of the Boughs’ eternal fog. Because the mist is infused with aetheric energy, it carries sound much further and with more clarity than normal air. A message spoken in Fog-Tongue can be "bounced" off the water’s surface and reflected by the mangrove roots, allowing it to travel for miles without losing its meaning.

Cultural and Mystical Significance

To the Mist-Whiskers, the Fog-Tongue is a sacred gift from the Mist-Weaver. It is used to:

  1. Command the Mist: Skilled shamans like High Shaman Kaelis can use the language to physically thicken or part the fog.
  2. Navigate the Labyrinth: Sailors use simple "Mist-Clicks" to determine their distance from the mangrove roots through echo-location.
  3. Commune with the Mother-Tree: The language allows the seers to "read" the rhythmic heartbeat and internal sap-flow of the tree.

Outside Perception

To those who do not speak it, the Fog-Tongue sounds like nothing more than the natural background noise of the forest—the rustling of leaves, the dripping of water, or the chirping of insects. This makes it a perfect tool for clandestine communication, as even the most observant Pirate Lord would likely dismiss a Fog-Tongue message as simple ambient sound.
