Twisted Ecology

Twisted Ecology of the Western Edge

The environment around Fortune's Lake and the Mana Wastes is not merely "dead"—it is fundamentally altered. The rules of biology have been replaced by the chaotic whims of the Aether.

Flora: The Devouring Green

The plants here do not seek sunlight; they seek magic.

  • Mana-Drain Vines: Found clinging to the edges of Fortune's Lake. These vines are semi-sentient and will lash out at anything carrying a magical charge (including spellcasters and enchanted gear), draining the energy until the target is "inert."
  • Glass-Petal Orchids: Beautiful, translucent flowers that grow near Aether-Nodes. Their petals are razor-sharp and vibrate at a frequency that can shatter standard glass or crystal containers.
  • The Whispering Willow: Mutated trees that absorb the memories of those who die beneath them. Their leaves rustle even in total stillness, playing back fragments of last words and screams.

Fauna: Mutated Predators

The wildlife of the Wastes is driven by a singular, painful hunger for stable energy.

  • Void-Hounds: Once common wolves, these pack hunters now possess the ability to "blink" short distances. They are entirely black, absorbing all light around them, making them nearly invisible at night.
  • Phase-Spiders: These arachnids weave webs that exist partially in the Ethereal Plane. A scavenger might walk through a seemingly clear doorway only to find themselves entangled in a web they cannot see or touch.
  • Aether-Gazers: Massive, owl-like birds with four eyes—two that see the physical world, and two that see Aether Currents. They are often followed by scavengers, as they naturally congregate above rich crystal deposits.

The Lake of Shadows (Fortune's Lake)

The lake itself is a massive basin of "heavy" Aether.

  • Sunken Horrors: The fish in the lake have grown to monstrous sizes. Many have developed bioluminescent lures that mimic the glow of a high-grade Aether-crystal to trick scavengers into the water.
  • The Mists: Every morning, a thick, purple mist rolls off the lake. It is known to cause "Temporary Displacement"—where a person might find themselves standing ten feet to the left of where they actually are, often leading to fatal falls.

The Survival Chain

In this ecology, nothing is wasted. A Void-Hound that dies is immediately consumed by Mana-Drain Vines, which are then harvested by scavengers for their potent (if unstable) fibers. It is a cycle of corruption that feeds on itself.
