The Toxic Shallows

The Toxic Shallows
On the western edge of Fortune's Lake, far from the polished piers of the town center, lies a stretch of water that even the most desperate scavengers avoid. The Toxic Shallows are the result of decades of unregulated Aetheric runoff from the nearby Mana Wastes, combined with the industrial waste of the lake-side refineries. The water here is a sickly, iridescent green, thick with the smell of sulfur and decaying magic.
The Mutated Kelp
The defining feature of the shallows is the "Void-Kelp"—a mutated form of aquatic vegetation that has adapted to thrive in the toxic environment. These leathery, purple-black fronds grow with unnatural speed, often entangling boats and trapping anything that ventures too close. The kelp is highly acidic and can eat through a wooden hull in a matter of hours.
Scavengers and Outcasts
Despite the danger, the Toxic Shallows are home to a small community of "Rust-Pickers"—outcasts and criminals who live in shanty-towns built on the backs of rusted, half-sunken barges. They survive by "fishing" for discarded Aether-components and rare minerals that have settled into the sludge. These people are often marked by "Lake-Sickness," a slow-acting magical mutation that turns their skin a translucent grey.
A Growing Threat
Recent reports suggest that the toxicity of the shallows is spreading. The mutated kelp has been seen creeping toward the main shipping lanes, and several merchant vessels have reported sightings of "Glint-Striders"—multi-legged, crystalline predators that hunt in the shallow, poisoned waters. If the runoff from the Mana Wastes is not contained, the entire western half of Fortune's Lake could soon be consumed by the sludge.
