Black Market Aether Trade

The Black Market Aether Trade
While Kigum regulates aether through the High Temples and Steamfort through the Industrial Guilds, Crystal Cove is the undisputed capital of the Aether Black Market. Here, raw energy is the only currency that truly matters.
The Economy of the Cove
In Crystal Cove, standard gold coins (Kigum Florins or Steamfort Marks) are accepted but often devalued. The primary unit of trade is the Aether Shard—a small, stabilized fragment of raw aether crystal.
The Aether Standard:
- Shard: Used for daily transactions (food, drink, small repairs).
- Cluster: Used for high-stakes gambling, purchasing ships, or bribing officials.
- Core: Rare, high-purity crystals used to power capital ships or experimental weapons.
The Smuggler's Routes
The "Silk Road" of the sea is the Aether-Run, a series of hidden passages through the Mana Wastes and into the ports of the Eastern Continent.
- The Ghost Route: A path through the mist that only specific navigators know.
- The Deep-Dive: Utilizing submersible skiffs to avoid surface blockades.
- The High-Flight: Rare but effective, using small aether-balloons to hop between the floating islands above the Archipelago.
The Role of the Gilded Hand
The Gilded Hand (Aethervale's premier merchant guild) maintains a "neutral" presence in Crystal Cove. They act as the primary brokers for the pirates, selling stolen Kigum silks and Steamfort tech to the highest bidder in the Western Continent.
- The Exchange: Located in the heart of Crystal Cove, this massive floating market is where the Gilded Hand operates, ensuring that even pirates can enjoy the luxuries of the world—for a steep price.
Prohibited Goods
Even among pirates, some items are considered "too hot" for the open market:
- Unstable Void-Cores: Aether crystals corrupted by the Mana Wastes. They are highly volatile and can destroy entire islands if handled incorrectly.
- Steamfort Blueprints: Possessing these can bring the full wrath of the Ironclad Fleet.
- Kigum Reliquaries: Sacred artifacts that the High Temples will stop at nothing to recover.
The "Tax" of the Lords
To fund the defense of the Archipelago, the Council of Five imposes a "Protection Fee" on all successful raids. This aether is used to maintain the Cove Barrier, a massive arcane shield that hides the entrance to the main harbor from prying eyes.
