Observations on Combustion
The current issue with the Mk III cores is the volatility of the raw Aether-crystals. When subjected to pressures exceeding 400 PSI, the crystals begin to resonate uncontrollably, leading to the... unfortunate incident in Sector 4 last week.
To solve this, I propose implementing a dual-chamber system.
- Chamber Alpha: The primary combustion chamber, lined with thermal-resistant dwarven steel. The crystals are introduced here and ignited using a standard flint-spark mechanism.
- Chamber Beta: A secondary, water-cooled chamber. The raw magical energy released by the combustion in Alpha is channeled into Beta, superheating the water and generating the steam pressure needed to drive the pistons.
The "Bleed" Problem
Even with the dual-chamber system, we are experiencing a phenomenon I call "Aether-Bleed." The energy generated isn't just heat; it's raw magic. This magic is leaking through the iron casing and causing spontaneous mutations in the surrounding metal—last week, a wrench turned into a singing bird before exploding.
Proposed Solution: We need to incorporate a dampening field. I loathe to admit it, but we may need to consult the Kigum arcanists on how to create a proper containment ward, or alternatively, line the casing with null-magic ore from the Wastes. The latter is preferable; I refuse to rely on elven or human magic to make our machines work.
Final Note
If we can stabilize the Mk IV core, we can power the new dreadnoughts indefinitely. The sky will belong to Steamfort.
