Deep Earth Bestiary

Deep-Earth Bestiary
The subterranean networks of the Southern Continent are home to creatures that have evolved in total darkness, often mutated by the leaking Aether from the Mana Wastes or the ancient energies of the Broad Swells.
1. Lithovore Behemoth
- Description: A massive, slow-moving creature with a shell made of living granite. It feeds by grinding stone between its multi-layered mandibles, extracting trace minerals.
- Danger Level: Medium (High if provoked).
- Special Trait: Seismic Camouflage. When stationary, it is indistinguishable from a natural rock formation. Miners often accidentally tunnel into their sides, with disastrous results.
2. Shadow-Spinners
- Description: Translucent, multi-limbed arachnids that weave webs made of "Solidified Gloom." These webs don't just trap the body; they drain the light and warmth from their victims.
- Danger Level: High.
- Special Trait: Light-Eater Aura. Within 20 feet of a Shadow-Spinner, non-magical light sources (torches, lanterns) are extinguished, and magical light is dimmed by half.
3. Crystalline Shard-Flies
- Description: Tiny, insect-like constructs—or perhaps lifeforms—that resemble floating quartz crystals. They travel in swarms of thousands.
- Danger Level: Low (Individually), Extreme (Swarm).
- Special Trait: Resonant Vibration. A swarm can vibrate at a frequency that causes stone to shatter and iron to become brittle. They are drawn to Aether-sources and often clog the intake valves of unauthorized machinery.
4. The Gloom-Stalker (The "Silent Death")
- Description: A bipedal, leathery-skinned predator with elongated claws and no eyes. It navigates through hyper-sensitive echolocation.
- Danger Level: Extreme.
- Special Trait: Aether-Scent. It can "smell" the use of magic. Casting a spell in the deep tunnels is like ringing a dinner bell for a Gloom-Stalker.
5. Stone-Eater Worms
- Description: Thick, fleshy worms with maws filled with concentric circles of diamond-hard teeth. They leave behind perfectly smooth, circular tunnels.
- Danger Level: Low.
- Economic Impact: While dangerous if they bite, their tunnels are often used by dwarves as ready-made transport routes, provided they can clear out the "Worm-Slime" (which is highly acidic).
