Subterranean Threats

The Whispering Dark: Subterranean Threats
The Deep Mines of Steamfort are not merely a place of industry; they are a borderland. Below the deepest shafts lie the Abyssal Reaches, a realm of shadow and hunger. Occasionally, the barriers between Steamfort and the dark are breached, leading to events the miners call "The Shudder."
The Hollow-Men (Aether-Ghouls)
When a miner dies of Aether-Rot and their body is not properly incinerated, the high concentration of Aetheric energy can reanimate the corpse.
- Behavior: These are not mindless zombies. They are driven by a singular, frantic urge to consume Aetherite. They can be heard scratching at the tunnel walls with their bare, bloody fingers.
- Danger: They are deceptively fast and can squeeze through ventilation pipes to reach the sleeping quarters.
The Breach-Stalkers
Vast, insectoid predators that dwell in the cracks of the world. They are attracted to the vibrations of the World-Eater bores.
- Appearance: They are covered in a chitinous armor that reflects light in a way that makes them nearly invisible. Their many eyes glow with a sickly violet hue.
- The 'Snatch-and-Pull': They prefer to drag their prey into small, unreachable crevices. A miner can disappear in the blink of an eye, leaving behind only a discarded helmet.
The Gloom-Spore
A fungal infection that spreads through the steam pipes.
- The Symptom: Infected individuals begin to hear voices in the rhythmic clanking of the machinery. They eventually wander off into the unmapped tunnels, convinced the darkness is calling their name.
- The Bloom: When the host dies, their body bursts into a cloud of spores that can infect an entire sector if not immediately purged with fire.
Breach Protocol 'Cinder'
Should a significant entity break through into the mines, the Steam-Barons have a standing order: Protocol Cinder.
- Seal: All pneumatic doors to the affected level are locked.
- Vent: High-pressure steam is pumped into the sector until the temperature reaches 300 degrees.
- Purge: If the steam fails, the sector is collapsed using demolition charges. The lives of the miners within are considered a "Necessary Operational Expense."
"You learn to stop listening to the pipes. If you listen too long, you'll hear them talking back. And they never have anything good to say." — Old Silas, 30-year Mine Veteran
