Mining Conditions

The Pits of Despair: Mining Conditions in Steamfort's Deep
The prosperity of Steamfort is built upon the broken backs of those who toil in the Deep Mines. Located miles beneath the iron-shod streets of the surface city, the conditions in the Pits are nothing short of horrific.
The Environment
- Crushing Pressure: At the lowest levels, the sheer weight of the Northern Continent creates a claustrophobic atmosphere that makes even breathing a chore.
- Infernal Heat: Proximity to the planet's core and the constant venting of high-pressure steam from the city's infrastructure above keeps the tunnels at a steady, sweltering 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Toxic Atmosphere: The air is a thick soup of coal dust, sulfur, and "Aether-Damp"—a volatile gas that can ignite from a single spark or cause hallucinations if inhaled for too long.
The Workers
The workforce is primarily composed of "Debt-Miners"—individuals whose families have owed the Steam-Barons for generations. They are tethered to their sectors by heavy iron chains, both literal and metaphorical.
- The Lung-Rot: A common ailment where the lungs crystallize from inhaling pulverized Aetherite. It is a slow, painful death that the Overseers consider "a loss of efficiency" rather than a tragedy.
- Shift Cycles: Miners work 18-hour shifts, followed by 4 hours of sleep in communal "Soot-Cots," where the sound of grinding machinery never ceases.
The Overseers
Order is maintained by the Iron Guard, a paramilitary force equipped with pressurized steam-batons and gas masks. Their primary duty is to ensure the quotas are met, regardless of the "Expenditure of Flesh."
"In Steamfort, gold is measured in blood, and iron is forged in tears. Down here, the sun is a myth and the dark is the only god that hears your prayers." — Attributed to Kaelen 'Iron-Lung' Thorne, Rebel Miner (Executed 432 AW)
