Aether is the lifeblood of Aethervale's magic and industry. However, the High Council of Mages in Kigum has kept the true nature of Aether hidden to maintain their grip on power and to conceal their own dangerous dependencies.

Rumor 9: Expansion of the Mana Wastes

Rumor: The Mana Wastes are slowly expanding by three inches every single day. The Truth: The expansion is actually a "Mana-Vacuum" effect. Because the High Council of Mages and the Ironbeard Syndicate are consuming Aether at such an unsustainable rate, the world's natural Aetheric-Pressure is dropping. The Mana Wastes are "filling the void" left by this over-consumption. The expansion isn't constant; it accelerates every time a new Aether-Engine is brought online in Steamfort or a major ritual is performed in Kigum.

Rumor 13: The Null-Sphere Shard

Rumor: There is a "Null-Sphere" shard hidden in the basement of the High Council of Mages in Kigum. The Truth: The Council isn't just "hiding" it; they are using it as a "Garbage Disposal" for Failed Experiments. Any mage who accidentally creates a "Mana-Void" or a "Temporal-Rift" is ordered to bring it to the basement, where it is consumed by the shard. The shard is growing larger with every meal, and the Council is beginning to fear that it will eventually consume the entire Academy.

Rumor 19: Drinking Liquid Aether

Rumor: Drinking liquid Aether directly will give you permanent magic powers (but will also turn you to glass). The Truth: This refers to the "Glass-Heart Transformation." Drinking refined Aether-Fuel creates a "Mana-Circuit" within the body, allowing the imbiber to cast spells without a wand or staff. However, the human body cannot handle the "Radiant Heat" of the Aether. The "glass" is actually a form of "Aetheric-Calcification." The user becomes a living crystal, their soul trapped in a beautiful, translucent statue that can still perceive the world but never speak or move again.

Rumor 39: The Kigum Dormant Volcano

Rumor: The "Aether-Node" in Kigum is actually a dormant volcano that the mages are suppressing. The Truth: The "Volcano" is actually a "Geyser of Raw Mana." In the Age of Myth, it was a natural fountain of energy. The High Council built the Academy directly over it to "cap" the geyser and funnel the power into their private vaults. If the cap were ever removed, the resulting "Mana-Eruption" would level Kigum and create a second, even more dangerous Mana Waste in the heart of the Eastern Continent.

Rumor 48: The Nervous System of the World

Rumor: The "Aether-Currents" are actually the nervous system of a giant entity the world is built on. The Truth: This is the "Gaia-Network" theory, and it is correct. Aethervale is a "Bio-Mechanical Organism" created by the First Brood (see Truth 86). The Aether-Currents carry "Synaptic Data" between the various Nodes. When we mine crystals or siphon currents, we are effectively performing "Lobotmizing Surgery" on the planet. The world isn't "dying" from pollution; it is losing its ability to think and regulate its own environment.

Rumor 56: Pure Aether Black Market

Rumor: There is a "Black Market" for "Pure Aether" located in the sewers of Kigum. The Truth: The "Market" is run by a group of rogue mages called the "Unbound." They have tapped directly into the Kigum Node through an old drainage pipe. They sell "Pure Aether" to desperate students and failed wizards. However, this Aether is "un-filtered," containing the "Psychic Residue" of the planet. Those who use it often start hearing the "Whispers of the Earth," which eventually leads to the same "Aetheric-Synchronization" seen in Steamfort (see Truth 58).

Rumor 62: Memory Erasing Null-Sphere

Rumor: The "Null-Sphere" can erase anyone's existence from the memory of the entire world. The Truth: This is the "Oblivion-Protocol." The High Council uses a specialized Null-Sphere to "clean up" political messes. When a prominent figure becomes too troublesome, they aren't killed; they are "un-made." Their history, their family, and their deeds are erased from the Aetheric-Record. This is how the "Fifth Member" of the Vanguard was lost (see Truth 52).

Rumor 65: Aether Vapor Addiction

Rumor: The "High Council of Mages" is secretly addicted to "Raw Aether" vapors. The Truth: The Council members use "Aether-Inhalers" to maintain their connection to the Kigum Node. The "Raw Vapors" grant them expanded consciousness and near-immortality, but at the cost of physical dependency. If they go more than 24 hours without an "Inhalation," their bodies begin to rapidly age and decay. They are "Aether-Liches" in all but name, tethered to the Node to survive.

Rumor 68: Truth-Telling Crystals

Rumor: The "Aether-Crystals" glow brighter when someone tells a lie near them. The Truth: This is a side effect of the "Resonance-Field." Aether-crystals are sensitive to "Psychic Intent." When someone tells a lie, the "Disharmony" in their mind causes a brief spike in the localized Aetheric-Pressure. The crystal absorbs this spike and releases it as light. The Bank uses this property in their "Truth-Seeking Rooms" to ensure that all financial disclosures are accurate.

Rumor 85: The Northern Shift

Rumor: The "Aether-Currents" are shifting toward the North, which will eventually leave Kigum powerless. The Truth: The shift is being caused by the "Aetheric-Siphons" in Steamfort (see Truth 12). By draining so much energy from the Plane of Fire, the Syndicate has created a "Mana-Low" in the North. The world's natural currents are being "pulled" toward this low-pressure zone. If the shift continues, Kigum’s Node will "go dark" within the next decade, leading to total economic collapse for the Eastern Continent.

Rumor 96: Aether-Crystal Explosion

Rumor: The "Aether-Crystals" will explode if they are exposed to the "Null-Sphere." The Truth: It’s not an explosion, but a "Total Annihilation Event." When a source of "Infinite Potential" (Aether) meets a source of "Absolute Nothingness" (Null-Sphere), the resulting reaction creates a "Void-Flash" that can disintegrate matter within a 100-yard radius. The High Council is currently researching how to weaponize this "Annihilation-Reaction" to create a "Void-Bomb" capable of destroying the Whispering Lich once and for all.
