The Hollow Price

The Hollow Price

Overview

In the desperate times of Aethervale, the promise of bringing a loved one back from the dead is a temptation few can resist. While minor restorative magics can heal near-fatal wounds, true Aetheric resurrection—pulling a soul back from the beyond after it has crossed over—is a rare and highly forbidden art. The reason for this prohibition is shrouded in dark rumors, collectively known as "The Hollow Price."

The Law of Equivalent Exchange

The fundamental truth of Aetheric resurrection is that the cosmic balance of souls cannot be cheated. The Aether, the chaotic energy field that permeates the world, demands an absolute equivalent exchange. To draw a specific soul back into the mortal realm, an anchor must be provided, and a space must be made.

The Hollow Price dictates that for a soul to be resurrected, another soul must be forcibly expelled into the void to take its place. This is not a willing sacrifice; the ritual inevitably claims the soul of the closest, most spiritually connected individual to the resurrected—often the very person performing or commissioning the ritual.

The Mystery and the Horror

The horror of the Hollow Price is that it is often delayed or subtle. A mother resurrects her child, only to find herself slowly losing her emotions, memories, and ultimately her life force over the following months, as her soul is slowly siphoned away to pay the cosmic debt. In some gruesome cases, the ritual randomly claims the soul of a bystander or a deeply connected friend miles away, leading to sudden, inexplicable deaths.

Necromancers and desperate arcanists continually seek a way to bypass the Hollow Price—attempting to substitute animal souls, creating artificial soul-gems, or tricking demons into taking the burden. Yet, the Aether is rarely fooled. The mystery remains: is there a loophole in the fabric of existence, or is the Hollow Price an immutable law of the universe, designed to prevent mortals from playing god?
