Type: Tavern / Outpost Location: The edge of the Mana Wastes, Western Continent.

The Last Refuge is a stark, functional, and incredibly robust tavern that serves as the final point of civilization before entering the absolute chaos of the Mana Wastes. Built with ten-foot-thick stone walls reinforced with lead plating and ancient anti-magic wards, it is designed to withstand both physical attacks and the unpredictable surges of wild magic that frequently sweep through the region. The interior is cramped and dimly lit, filled with the weary faces of scavengers, desperate adventurers, and those who have nowhere else to go.

The tavern is owned by "Grim" Goram, a retired soldier who fought in the War of Sunder and has seen more horrors than most men have hairs on their heads. The signature drink is Null-Water, a clear, flavorless liquid that has been magically processed to remove all Aetheric charge, making it a perfect (if boring) way to ground oneself after exposure to the Wastes. The Last Refuge is a place of grim silence and whispered warnings, where the price of a room includes the understanding that you might not survive the night if the wards fail.

Plot Hooks:

  • The Ward Failure: One of the tavern's primary anti-magic wards has begun to flicker, allowing a small "Gravity Eddy" to form in the common room. The party must find a way to reinforce the ward before the tavern is torn apart.
  • The Last Will: A dying scavenger gives the party a sealed envelope and asks them to deliver it to a contact in the Merchant's Wharf if they ever make it back to Kigum.
  • The Siege of the Wastes: A massive pack of Void-Hounds, driven by a particularly powerful wild magic storm, is attempting to break into The Last Refuge. The party must lead the defense of the tavern until the storm passes.
