The Hollowed Root

The Hollowed Root

The Hollowed Root

Overview & Aesthetic

The Hollowed Root is a massive, ancient tunnel system located beneath the roots of a secondary, uninfected World Tree on the outskirts of Lemmion. The tunnels are naturally reinforced by the tree's gargantuan roots, which create a series of arched halls and small, dry chambers. The air is cool and smells of fresh earth and pine. The lighting is provided by small clusters of bioluminescent mushrooms and glowing Aether-moss.

History & Lore

The root system was originally used by the Sylvan Elves as a place of refuge during ancient wars. When the Emerald Rot began to consume Lemmion, the "Unbound Vanguard" rediscovered the tunnels and converted them into a secret base of operations. Because the tree above is still healthy, its natural magic provides a shield against Xylira's scrying and the spread of the Rot.

Points of Interest

  • The Command Root: A large central chamber where the Vanguard plans their guerrilla missions against the corrupted elves.
  • The Refugee Warrens: A series of smaller tunnels where uninfected elves and other woodland creatures find shelter.
  • The Root-Sap Well: A small pool of pure, uncorrupted tree-sap used for its powerful healing properties.
  • The Hidden Exit: A narrow tunnel that emerges in a hollowed-out log several miles away from the base.

Local Factions & NPCs

  • The Unbound Vanguard: The primary resistance group led by a pragmatist named Vaelin.
  • The Steamfort Surveyors: A group of dwarven engineers who provide the Vanguard with explosives and gear in exchange for "Rot-Timber" samples.
  • Sylvan Refugees: Displaced elves and fey who help with the base's upkeep.

Environmental Hazards / Mechanics

  • Antimagic Shielding: The healthy tree roots act as a natural Nondetection spell for everyone inside the tunnels.
  • Narrow Passages: Many tunnels are small. Large creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls and Dexterity saving throws.
  • Natural Healing: Spending a long rest in the Hollowed Root allows a character to recover all hit dice and gain 10 temporary hit points.
