Karak-Vann

History

Karak-Vann is a legendary, lost sector deep within the mountain foundation of Dal Dur. It was the personal workshop and ultimate mausoleum of a brilliant, eccentric dwarven architect of the same name. Centuries ago, Karak-Vann mastered gravitational magic, seeking to build a city that defied the laws of physics. His experiments were deemed too dangerous by the High King, and his sector was sealed off. Upon his death, his followers converted the area into a massive, multi-dimensional puzzle-tomb to protect his greatest inventions from the unworthy.

Key Features

  • The Tuning Forks: The defining feature of Karak-Vann. Massive, rune-carved iron tuning forks are scattered throughout the chambers. Striking them with a weapon or spell alters the direction of gravity in that specific room, turning walls into floors or creating zero-gravity environments.
  • The Inverted Architecture: Entire wings of the tomb are built completely upside down or sideways. Furniture is bolted to ceilings, and grand staircases lead into bottomless pits. Navigating the sector requires three-dimensional thinking.
  • The Core Dynamo: At the heart of the tomb lies a massive, spinning sphere of pure Aether-energy that powers the gravitational anomalies. It casts a blinding, shifting light throughout the deeper chambers.

Hazards

  • Lethal Gravity Shifts: Unpredictable or trap-triggered gravity shifts are the primary danger. Falling "up" into a ceiling lined with iron spikes, or being caught in a localized hyper-gravity well that crushes armor and halves movement speed, are constant threats.
  • Floating Debris: In zero-gravity transition zones, massive stone blocks, broken statues, and ancient weapons float freely. Navigating these zones requires Athletics checks to push off objects; failing leaves a character drifting helplessly.
  • The Guardians: The tomb is defended not by typical undead, but by advanced, anti-gravity constructs, including the formidable Tomb Guardian, designed to fight seamlessly in shifting orientations.

Local Factions

  • The Syndicate Expedition: A heavily armed team of Syndicate mercenaries, led by Overseer Vorkas, has breached the outer doors. They are attempting to brute-force their way through the puzzles using explosives and brute strength to claim the Aether-technology within.
  • The Echoes of the Architect: Automated, holographic projections of Karak-Vann himself occasionally appear. They offer incredibly complex, often condescending riddles that provide clues to the tuning forks, mocking those who rely on brawn over brains.
