The Mana Sump Kigum

The Mana-Sump (Kigum)
Type: Sub-District / Hazard Zone Location: The lowest subterranean levels of The Shadows in Kigum.
The Mana-Sump is the toxic byproduct of Kigum's magical supremacy. It is a series of interconnected natural caverns and ancient sewers where the city's concentrated magical waste—the runoff from thousands of experiments, rituals, and Aether-industrial processes—collects. The result is a landscape of glowing, oily pools, jagged crystalline growths, and air that is perpetually thick with the smell of ozone and sulfur. It is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable areas in the city.
Despite the extreme hazards, the Mana-Sump is a hub of desperate activity. "Sump-Scavengers" risk their lives to harvest the unstable "Wild Aether" crystals that form in the pools, which can be sold on the black market for a high price. The Sump is also home to various mutated creatures, such as "Crystalline Monstrosities" and "Void-Hounds," that have been warped by the ambient magic. It is a place of absolute lawlessness, where even the Gilded Hand treads carefully and the City Watch refuses to enter without a full detachment of battle-mages.
Plot Hooks:
- The Sump-Burst: A massive buildup of magical pressure in the Sump is threatening to cause a "Mana-Eruption" that could destroy the foundations of the Merchant's Wharf. The party must descend into the depths to release the pressure safely.
- The Missing Researcher: A brilliant but reckless student from the Academy District has gone missing in the Sump while researching "Aether-Mutation." The party is hired to find them and retrieve their research notes.
- The Sump-Lords: A group of outcasts has established a small, fortified settlement within the Sump, claiming it as their own independent territory. The party must negotiate with their leader to secure safe passage for a smuggling operation.
