Phial of Volatile Azure

Phial of Volatile Azure
Very Rare, Consumable (Alchemical Weapon)
Properties
The Phial of Volatile Azure is a reinforced, dual-chambered glass flask. The upper chamber holds a shimmering, high-viscosity cerulean fluid—distilled mucilage from the Indigo Cataracts. The lower chamber contains a swirling, pungent yellow-green acid—purified goblin bile.
As an action, you can throw the phial at a point up to 60 feet away. Upon impact, the glass shatters, mixing the two fluids and triggering a violent, alchemical transmutation.
- Concussive Rupture: Every creature within a 15-foot radius must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 4d6 Force damage and 2d6 Acid damage as the fluids ignite, and is knocked prone. On a success, the creature takes half damage and is not knocked prone.
- Gravitic Adhesion: The blast area becomes coated in a thick, semi-sentient azure sludge that warps localized gravity. For 1 minute, the 15-foot radius is considered Difficult Terrain. Any creature that starts its turn in the sludge or enters it for the first time on a turn must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be Restrained by the suffocating, heavy mass. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns to break free.
- Spontaneous Animation: There is a 25% chance (roll a 1d4; on a 4) that the leftover sludge coalesces into a Minor Azure Ooze (Small size, aggressive) that immediately attacks the nearest non-goblin creature.
Lore & Origin
The Phials are the primary industrial ordnance of The Viscous Brotherhood, manufactured within the humid, throbbing depths of the Gastric Caverns of Oramu. While the blue mucilage leaking from the world's fractured cliffs is inert to most, the Brotherhood’s leader, Krazgutt the Indigested, discovered that the bile of his own kind acts as a hyper-reactive catalyst.
These phials represent the perfection of that discovery. They are not merely grenades; they are "bottled extinction." Each flask is carefully filled by zealots who view the mixture as the union of their god’s blood (the titan Oramu) and their own biological essence. The Brotherhood uses these weapons to terraform battlefields, turning solid ground into a choking, gravitational nightmare that mimics the digestive environment of the titan’s gullet.
The Price of Power
The Phial of Volatile Azure is notoriously unstable and "hungry."
- Volatile Instability: If a creature carrying one or more phials takes more than 20 points of damage from a single source, or falls from a height of 10 feet or more, they must roll a d20. On a 1, one of the phials shatters prematurely on their person, centering the explosion on the carrier.
- The Scent of the Titan: The fluids within the phial emit a faint, rhythmic vibration that can be felt by those sensitive to the arcane. While carrying a phial, you have disadvantage on Stealth checks against oozes, slimes, and members of the Viscous Brotherhood, who can "smell" the potency of the Azure from a distance.
