The Shield Guard

The Shield-Guard
The Shield-Guard was a legendary and elite military order of Dal-Dur, specifically tasked with the protection and maintenance of the "Southern Wards" that keep the Aetheric backwash of the Mana Wastes at bay. Composed of the most disciplined and resilient dwarven warriors and runesmiths, the order was founded by High King Durnar the Iron-Willed shortly after the activation of the first Great Anchor-Stones. Their mission was one of absolute sacrifice; they lived in the most irradiated and dangerous subterranean sectors, their lives dedicated to ensuring that the wards never faltered. To wear the heavy, rune-etched plate of the Shield-Guard was to accept a life of isolation, constant peril, and an almost certain death from Aetheric saturation.
The order's defining and final act occurred in 385 AW, during a catastrophic event known as "The Broad Swells Incursion." A massive "Mana-Typhoon" of unprecedented power breached the southern defensive perimeter, threatening to overwhelm the Great Anchor-Stones and trigger a continent-wide magical collapse. The entire Shield-Guard, numbering over five hundred elite warriors, deployed to the breach point. In a desperate, three-day battle against a tide of Void-mutated monstrosities and raw, chaotic energy, they held the line. Legend says they used their own rune-etched armor to "plug" the failing ley-line junctions, sacrificing their souls to ground the chaotic energy until the breach could be permanently sealed by the high runesmiths.
The sacrifice of the Shield-Guard in 385 AW resulted in the total annihilation of the order, but it saved the Southwestern Continent from certain destruction. Today, they are remembered as the "Martyrs of the South," their names etched into the obsidian walls of the Sanctuary Vaults. The order has never been fully reformed, as the knowledge and discipline required to serve in the Guard were largely lost with its members. However, the modern "Shield-Guard Auxiliary" serves as a ceremonial and custodial force, maintaining the monuments and providing limited security for the Anchor-Stones. The legacy of the original Shield-Guard remains a powerful symbol of dwarven resilience, a reminder that the price of safety in Aethervale is often paid in the blood of those willing to stand between civilization and the Void.
