Kobold Trap Generator

Kobolds of the Sub-Terran Accord are legendary for their traps. Use these tables to quickly generate a unique and deadly obstacle for your players.

Step 1: The Trigger

1Pressure Plate: Subtle indentation in the Aether-glass floor.
2Trip-Beam: A thin, nearly invisible beam of Aether-light.
3Sound Sensor: Triggers if anyone speaks above a whisper.
4Identification Check: Fails if the creature is not carrying an Accord-issued "Beacon-Shard."
5Weight Balance: Triggers if more than 500 lbs is in a 10-foot area.
6Timed Interval: The trap activates every 1d4 rounds regardless of presence.

Step 2: The Mechanism

1Flooding: The section of the tunnel is sealed and filled with water or acid.
2Aether-Glass Shards: The walls "shatter" (it's an illusion) and rain down real, razor-sharp glass.
3Gravity Shift: The gravity in the area reverses or becomes 5x stronger.
4Noxious Gas: A cloud of "Paralysis-Gas" or "Confusion-Mist" is released.
5Mechanical Scythes: Hidden blades sweep out from the walls at chest height.
6Aether-Blast: A concentrated beam of force energy is fired from a hidden nozzle.

Sample Trap: "The Crushing Light"

  • Trigger: Trip-Beam (DC 17 to spot).
  • Mechanism: Gravity Shift (5x stronger). Creatures in the area are knocked prone and their speed becomes 0. They take 22 (4d10) force damage at the start of each of their turns.
  • Counter: A hidden "Off-Switch" is located on the ceiling, reachable only with magic or a difficult climb (DC 20).
