The Gear-Bound

The Gear-Bound

The Gear-Bound are a testament to the lengths to which the dwarven race will go to fulfill a sacred oath. Originally a clan of master engineers known as the Iron-Watchers, they discovered the Chronos-Clock millennia ago and realized it was failing. To save the world's magic, they entered into the "Great Covenant," vowing to maintain the engine for as long as time itself existed.

The Fusion Process

As the environment around the Chronos-Clock is saturated with extreme aetheric pressure and grinding mechanical forces, flesh and bone proved too fragile. Over generations, the Gear-Bound developed the "Rite of Integration." Through this process, failing limbs and organs are replaced with high-precision clockwork equivalents, powered by the very aetheric runoff they regulate. A typical Gear-Bound dwarf might have a brass-plated heart, gears visible beneath translucent skin, or eyes that function like telescopic lenses.

Cultural Outlook

The Gear-Bound view themselves as the "Cogs in the Cosmic Machine." Their culture is one of absolute precision, duty, and stoicism. They speak in rhythmic cadences and value punctuality above all else. To a Gear-Bound, a delay of a single second is not just a nuisance—it is a moral failing. They rarely leave the vicinity of the Chronos-Clock, as their modified bodies require the specific aetheric frequency of the engine to function optimally.

Relationship with the Surface

Most of the world believes the Gear-Bound to be a myth or a collective hallucination of miners who have spent too long in the deep dark. On the rare occasions they are encountered, they are often mistaken for constructs. They have little interest in the politics of the surface, viewing the squabbles of empires as "momentary friction" compared to the eternal rotation of the Great Gears.

The Tick-Tock Cycle

Gear-Bound life is dictated by the "Tick" and the "Tock." During the "Tick," they perform active maintenance, repairs, and defense. During the "Tock," they enter a state of "Kinetic Sleep," standing perfectly still while their internal gears wind themselves using the vibrations of the Chronos-Clock.
