The Vault of Shattered Souls

The Crypt of Memories

Deep beneath the Mana Wastes lies a vault designed to store the collective knowledge and souls of the Magi-ocracy in case of a global catastrophe. The catastrophe happened, but the vault was corrupted.

Dungeon Layout: The Crystal Catacombs

The vault consists of long, narrow tunnels lined with "Memory Crystals"—glowing gems that contain the memories of the dead.

  • The Hall of Whispers: A tunnel where the crystals are cracked, leaking the voices of thousands of souls into the air.
  • The Archive of Ash: A massive room filled with burnt scrolls and shattered stone tablets.
  • The Sanctum of the Soul-Forge: The lowest level, where a massive machine once transferred souls into new bodies.

Traps and Hazards

  • Memory Drains: Stepping on a certain tile forces a DC 15 Intelligence save. On a failure, the creature loses a random memory (or a skill proficiency) until they finish a long rest.
  • Necrotic Fog: A thick, grey mist that clings to the floor. Any creature that starts its turn in the fog takes 2d6 necrotic damage.
  • Soul-Snare Wires: Nearly invisible wires made of ghost-silk. If tripped, they summon 1d4 Shadows.

Puzzle: The Echoes of the Past

To enter the Sanctum of the Soul-Forge, players must find three "Master Crystals" and place them in the correct pedestals.

  • The Problem: The pedestals are labeled with riddles about the lives of the people whose souls are in the crystals (a Baker, a General, and a Thief).
  • The Solution: Players must "listen" to the memories within various crystals found in the Archive of Ash to piece together the identities of the souls and place them in their respective pedestals.

Denizens: The Flesh-Grafted

  • Flesh-Weavers: Hideous, multi-armed horrors that stitch together body parts from the "Stone-Echoes" above. They have a high AC and can use a "Surgical Strike" to paralyze targets.
  • Soul-Eater Ghouls: Ghouls with translucent skin that glow with the energy of the souls they have consumed. Their bite deals necrotic damage and can reduce a target's maximum HP.
  • The Keeper of Memories: A massive, floating eye composed of hundreds of smaller eyes, each one a trapped soul. It can cast "Modify Memory" and "Confusion" at will.

The Soul-Forge

The Soul-Forge is still active, but it is currently producing "Empty Ones"—flesh golems with no souls that wander the vault aimlessly. Destroying the Forge would end the production of these horrors but would also permanently delete the remaining memories of the Magi-ocracy.
