Flora And Fauna Of The Dark Tunnels

Flora And Fauna Of The Dark Tunnels

Flora and Fauna of the Dark Tunnels

While the Deep-Mines are often thought of as sterile stone, the "Wild Shafts" and the edges of the Crystal Chasms teem with life that has adapted to the lightless, Aether-rich environment.

Subterranean Flora

1. Luminous Moss (The "Miners' Friend")

  • Description: A soft, pale-green moss that grows on damp cave walls. It emits a steady, cool light when it senses motion.
  • Use: Miners often "seed" new tunnels with this moss to provide natural, non-volatile lighting.

2. Stone-Grip Vines

  • Description: Thick, black vines that look like cracks in the stone. They are incredibly strong and have microscopic barbs that "bite" into the rock.
  • Use: The dwarves weave these vines into ropes that are nearly impossible to cut or break.

3. Echo-Mushrooms

  • Description: Large, grey fungi with bell-shaped caps.
  • Property: They "record" the last sound they heard and repeat it at random intervals. A forest of Echo-Mushrooms can be a cacophony of footsteps, whispers, and distant drips, often leading inexperienced travelers into traps.

Subterranean Fauna (Non-Predatory)

1. The Tunnel-Mole (Giant)

  • Description: A creature the size of a pony with shovel-like claws.
  • Relationship: They are often domesticated by the dwarves of House Deepdelve to help clear rubble or scent-out new ore veins.

2. Aether-Bats

  • Description: Small, translucent bats that "eat" ambient magical energy.
  • Property: They are harmless but highly annoying, as they tend to swarm around anyone carrying an enchanted item or a lit Aether-lamp, occasionally "short-circuiting" the magic for a few seconds.

3. The Stone-Cricket

  • Description: An insect with a shell that looks exactly like a pebble.
  • Lore: Dwarven children often keep them as pets. Their rhythmic "chirp" (produced by rubbing their legs against the stone) is said to be the most relaxing sound in the world to a dwarf.

The "Flesh-Eater" Warning

Travelers are warned to avoid the "Crimson Lichen." While it looks like a harmless red stain on the rock, it is a carnivorous colony that can dissolve leather and flesh in minutes if stepped upon.
