The Aurelius Heist: The Obsidian Vaults
Background & Objective
The Grand Arcane Bank of Kigum is the most secure location in Aethervale. Deep within its foundations lies the "Obsidian Vaults," the personal hoard of the bank's secret director: the ancient gold dragon Aurelius the Golden. A disgraced Archmage, Kaelen Voss, has hired the party to break into the vaults and steal the "Heart of Aether"—a primal crystal capable of powering a city (or a weapon of mass destruction).
Key NPCs & Motivations
- Kaelen Voss: A desperate man who claims he needs the Heart of Aether to cure his daughter’s mana-wasting disease. He is brilliant, paranoid, and willing to sacrifice the party.
- Aurelius the Golden: The ancient dragon who guards the vault. He is aware of the heist and views it as a "test" of his security—and the party’s character.
The Setting: The Obsidian Vaults
- The Anti-Magic Corridor: A long, narrow hall where all magic is suppressed, forcing the party to rely on physical skill and tools.
- The Hall of Mirrors: A psychological trap where the party must confront illusory versions of their own greed and failures to find the true exit.
- The Dragon’s Sanctum: A massive chamber of black glass and gold where the Heart of Aether is held within the coils of Aurelius himself.
Encounters & Branching Paths
- The Golem’s Toll (Combat): Facing the "Keyless Sentinels"—massive constructs that ignore the anti-magic field and attack anyone without a "Dragon’s Mark."
- The Mirror Paradox (Social/Challenge): Solving the riddle of the Hall of Mirrors, which requires the party to sacrifice something of value (literally or metaphorically) to proceed.
- The Heart-to-Heart with Aurelius (Diplomacy): Confronting the dragon. Players can try to justify their theft, plead for mercy, or offer a deal in exchange for the crystal.
- The Great Arcane Escape (Challenge): Once the Heart is taken, the bank’s magical wards reactivate. The party must escape through a collapsing maze of teleportation circles and arcane traps.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
- Success (Voss): Voss gets the crystal. His daughter is cured, but he uses the remaining power to take revenge on the Academy, making the party accomplices to a coup.
- Success (Aurelius): The dragon allows the party to leave with a "Gift of the Dragon" instead of the Heart, rewarding their honesty or bravery.
- Loot: Aurelius’s Scale (grants resistance to fire and advantage on Charisma checks), Key of the Obsidian Vault (opens any non-magical lock), and 15,000 gp in ancient gold coins.
