Kigum Node Encounters

Kigum Node Encounters

level_range: "1-5"

The Vault of Aether-Ribbons

Background & Objective

Kigum, the city of towers, is powered by the Grand Arcane Bank’s massive reserves of liquid Aether. Deep within the bank's most secure wing lies the "Vault of Aether-Ribbons," where the city's magical foundation is stored. A sudden "resonance leak" has caused the security systems to go haywire, and the vault is now a death trap of uncontrolled magical energy. The party is tasked with entering the vault and stabilizing the "Primary Node" before the entire district is vaporized in a mana-explosion.

Key NPCs & Motivations

  • Arch-Mage Valerius: The bank’s chief security officer. He is desperate to keep the leak a secret to avoid a run on the bank and a collapse of Kigum’s economy.
  • Subject 42: A mana-warped entity trapped inside the vault who was once a bank researcher. They want to be "released" into the Aether-stream, which would stabilize the node but kill Subject 42.

The Setting: The High-Security Wing

  • The Laser-Grid Corridor: A hallway crisscrossed with shimmering ribbons of pure Aether that can slice through anything they touch.
  • The Resonance Chamber: A massive hall where the air hums with power, causing wild magic surges and granting temporary boosts to spellcasters.
  • The Gravity-Free Gallery: An art collection where gravity has failed, leaving priceless statues and paintings floating as hazardous obstacles.

Encounters & Branching Paths

  • The Runic Cipher (Challenge): Solving the complex mathematical puzzles needed to temporarily deactivate segments of the Aether-Ribbon grid.
  • The Mana-Wight Ambush (Combat): Fighting off entities drawn to the Aether-leak—creatures that drain spell slots instead of life.
  • The Moral Choice (Social): Deciding whether to use Subject 42 as a "stabilizer" (killing them) or finding a riskier, more complex way to fix the node that might fail.
  • The Golem’s Toll (Combat): A final battle with the "Gold-Guardian," a massive construct made of coins and enchanted gems that defends the Primary Node.

Narrative Outcomes & Loot

  • Success: The district is saved. The Bank rewards the party with "Platinum Credit Notes" and high-level magical training.
  • Failure: The node explodes. A significant portion of the Academy District is destroyed, and magic becomes permanently unstable in Kigum.
  • Loot: Pearl of Power, Robes of the Archmagi (if they save the node without killing Subject 42), and 15,000 gp in refined Aether-bars.
